This page contains a summary of snowboard slang. Read this and
impress your fellow boarders with some kewl words. This is the
easiest way to be a hot boarder. The harder way is to learn all
the tricks. Enjoy!

barney v. for a person to approach a jump too slowly and stop at the top, thus flattening it and creating a traffic jam while he slowly rides down the other side. "Snowboarders hate it when skiers come into the park and barney all the jumps."
Betty n. a desirable female. Also, snowboard groupie.
bonk v. to strike something with the nose or tail of your board as you sail over it. "The management at Aspen discourages boarders from bonking trash cans, picnic tables, or skiers."
bulletproof adj. impenetrable icy conditions.
butt plant n. to fall hard with your rear end in the snow. Syn. Mr. Wilson. Ant. face plant.
Canadian bacon n. grabbing the board between your legs during a jump.
carving v. making a good, smooth turn.
chowder n. deep, newly fallen snow with a thick consistency; rhymes with powder.
cut n. pass. "That trick is really cut."
egg beater n. a dramatic crash in which lots of snow is churned up.
fakie adj. riding backwards, with the tail of the board forward. "Jimmy hit a bump, got good air, and landed fakie."
fly swat, fly swatter v., n. To catch a toeside edge and whack your head on the snow thus experiencing first hand the transfer of massive amounts of kinetic energy. The process is thought to mimic the action of fly retardation devices by the same name. Impact should be sufficient to loosen your brain, induce serious cranial thrombosis, or otherwise impair neural function. Syn. face plant - (Andrew D Endy)
freshies n. first tracks in new powder.
gaper n. person lacking coordination. "I was just landing when this gaper dive-bombed me from out of the trees, and his ski pole hit me in the head."
get schooled n. to wipe out.
goofy foot adj. having the right foot forward.
grommet n. young rookie boarder.
half-pipe n. a U-shaped launching pad carved out of the snow by a machine called a Pipe Dragon.
hit n. a hollow in the snow that makes a good launching ramp. Rel. taking a hit: taking a jump.
jib v. to ride over something other than snow. Examples: logs, picnic tables, trashcans, cars, skiers, etc.
Kodak courage n. instantaneous boost of bravery that goes against your every sense of self-preservation, often leading you to jump off a huge cliff or do something else risky, due to the sudden presence of a camera or a bunch of cute members of the opposite sex.
packistands n. Packs of snowboarders or skiers standing before or after a jump for no apparent reason. syn. picknickers - (Frank Madrigal)
pat the dog v. to stoop down and touch the snow with your hand.
phat adj. baggy or loose, referring to clothes.
pimps n. boarders who wear all the latest styles (currently grunge) and have the right look (haircut, equipment, attitude), but whose riding ability is inversely proportional to their "style" quotient. Syn. posers.
posse n. the group of boarders you ride with. Syn. pack.
ride v. to ride a snowboard. "Snowboard" is never used as a verb.
riding trees v. riding in areas where the trees are very close together; usually done off-trail and is best in deep powder.
rolling down the window v. when someone goes for air or rides off a cliff, then starts losing balance so that his arms rotate in large, backwards circles.
ruler n. a boarder with great riding skills, usually the best on the hill.
shiftie n. a maneuver with board twisted 90 degrees one way and body twisted 90 degrees the opposite way.
shredder v. outmoded name for a snowboarder, a media term not used in the snowboard culture.
sitting on the toilet adj. describes riders who think they are carving well, but are actually hanging their butts out.
slam v. to fall. Syn. bail.
slurpee n. slush conditions. Syn. oatmeal.
snake the line v. to cut in front of someone in the lift line or on an approach to a hit.
spank v. to launch. "Erin spanked off the groove around the lift line area and got a last little bit of air."
starfish v. to tak a high-speed fall in which the boarder cartwheels down the hill with his body stretched out.
stick n. snowboard. Syn. deck, plank, ride, snow toy.
sweet adj. descibes something that is good, was good, and is/was well done "That air you get of the table top is sweet." - (Anonymous)
switchstance adj. used to describe a trick done while trailing the foot you normally lead with. "This season I learned switchstance frontside 360's." Syn. switch.
two-plank wank n. what a boarder calls a skier if they aren't the best of friends. Also, wanker two-planker.
wompin' v. riding trees at high speed.
yard sale n. large crash in which a skier's hat, goggles, poles, and skis end up strewn across the hill, as though for a garage sale.
